Mary Kay: A Leader in the Beauty Product Industry
Mary Kay Cosmetics is an international company that sells beauty products. One woman started the business in the 1960s with an investment of $5,000. Mary Kathlyn Wagner was born in the state of Texas in 1918. For much of her childhood, she cared for her sick father while her mother worked long hours at a restaurant. Mary Kay married Ben Rogers when she was 17 years old. They had three children before he left home to serve in World War Two. When he returned, their marriage ended. Mary Kay looked for a job so she could support her children. She began selling different kinds of products. One night, Mary Kay was showing products at the home of Ova Heath Spoonemore. Ms. Spoonemore began giving her guests some homemade skin care products. The products were developed by her father, J.W. Heath, in Arkansas. Mary Kay tried the skin care products and liked them. She bought the rights to Heath’s skin care products and started her own company. She paid $500 for the legal rights to the products. And in 1963, The Mary Kay Cosmetics company began operating in Dallas, Texas. The idea was to sell skin care products through demonstrations in homes and offices. Independent sales representatives bought beauty products from the company and sold them at higher prices. Mary Kay decided that each representative who brought other saleswomen into the company would receive part of the new person’s earnings. That way, experienced sales representatives would be willing to train new ones. By 1965, the company was selling almost one million dollars in products. Mary Kay Cosmetics became one of the most successful direct sellers of skin care products in America. It continues to have sales offices and representatives in many different countries. Mary Kay aimed to grow sales based on the idea that it is best to compete against yourself. That means every individual is trying to beat their own sales records. Prizes for high sales marks included special paid holidays and jewelry. Until a few years ago, a pink Cadillac was a top prize. After her third husband, Mel Ash, died of cancer in 1980, she wanted to help find a cure for the disease. At first, she helped organizations raise money for research.

Learning English with English Clubs
For many English learners, speaking is the most difficult part of the language to master. To improve your speaking skills, you need to be able to practice with other English learners or English speakers. One way to do this is by joining – or starting – an English club. In today’s Education Tips, we discuss how English clubs can be helpful to your language-learning process. English clubs for language learning There are many reasons why English clubs can help learners of all ages and levels improve their English. The most important reason is that they offer learners a chance to practice English by actually speaking it. There are other advantages, too. English clubs are less formal than a classroom setting. Many learners find them more fun than usual English classes. They also let learners practice English in more real-life situations. This can increase a learner’s desire to practice and learn on their own. Bonnie Norton and Ernst Von Glasersfeld are learning theory experts. They say that using a language in authentic situations is very important for learners. So is being motivated to practice and improve, they say. Now that you understand some of the benefits of an English club, let’s discus how you can create your own club. Starting an English club Step1: Finding club members: The first step in starting an English club is to find club members. There are different ways to do this. If you are a teacher creating the club for your students, then the easiest way is to put up signs in classrooms advertising the club’s first meeting. You can also pass around a sign-up sheet in classes. If you are trying to start a club at your place of work, you can advertise your club by sending an email around to coworkers. You can also put up signs about the club around the workplace. If your club is open for anyone to join, you can use the internet to find members. Websites such as Meetup or Facebook are great places to announce club meetings and communicate with members. Step 2 – Find a meeting location: Next, you must find a place for your club to meet. This step is very important. The location of your club will affect how many people come to your meetings. It is important to consider several things when choosing a location.

Extend, Expand, etc.
This week on Ask a Teacher, we answer a question from Ann in China. Here is part of Ann’s question: Hello Teachers, Could you please help me understand the difference between "extend," "expand," "stretch," [and] "enlarge" when I describe an activity that makes something larger than its current state? Thank you, Ann. We can use the four verbs Ann asked about to express an increase in physical size or amount. We can also use them to express increasing the time an activity takes. Extend We often use the verb “extend” to talk about increasing the amount of time for an activity or program. For example: Officials want to extend the school year by six weeks. We can use the verb “extend” to express an increase in people, things, or ideas. Consider the following examples: The new rule extends to all employees in the company. They want to extend the benefits of freedom to people around the world. This research will extend our knowledge. We can also use “extend” to express the distance or the area something reaches. For example: The Rocky Mountains extend from the United States into Canada. Expand We use “expand” to express an increase in the size of a project or program. And, like “extend,” we can use “expand” to talk about including more people. Consider the following example: Officials want to expand the program to include people from developing countries. We commonly use “expand” in connection with business or industry: We want to expand our business to reach more customers. Stretch We can use the phrasal verb “stretch out” to express increasing the time to continue an activity: I wanted to stretch out my vacation for an extra two or three days. We can use the verb “stretch” to express improving our ability to do something: Learning a new language will stretch your mind and improve your problem-solving abilities. Note that when we use the verb “stretch” in this way, we communicate the idea that the improvement might be a little difficult or take a lot of effort. Enlarge Unlike the verb “extend,” we do not use “enlarge” to talk about an increase in time. Instead, it simply means to increase in size or scope. Scope means all of the things connected to an activity or project. Consider the following example:
